Wednesday Writers Weigh In: What Inspires You?

I was recently taking inventory of my current WIPs and I had to laugh to be reminded of where the inspiration for each story came from.

1)  a cheesy pick-up line a friend posted on Facebook

2)  a recent NPR story about Mars

3)  my current obsession with roasted Brussels Sprouts

4)  a rainy trip to the airport which caused me to reluctantly stuff something into my suitcase

All of these strange and unusual moments inspired me to start writing a PICTURE BOOK!  True story!

For those who read my stories on WriteOnCon 2012, can you guess what inspired each one?

What has inspired your recent WIPs?

  1. Funny, Marce! My newest is inspired by this cheesy old reality show that was on a few years ago. Stan Lee's Who Wants to Be a SuperHero?! (also I am COMPLETELY obsessed with roasted brussell sprouts - they are like candy in our house - also roasted cauliflower, broccoli - anything pretty much slathered in olive oil with some garlic left in an oven at high temp!)

    1. Agreed! We think that Roasted Brussels Sprouts should be served at movie theaters instead of popcorn. Yum!

  2. My current WIP was inspired by fall...a wish for fall due to the heat of the summer. I want pumpkins, and beautiful foliage!!!

Roasted brussel sprouts??? Sounds wonderful. I'll have to try this. Do you have a secret ingredient :-)

    1. Just slice them in half, toass them with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt! :)

  3. Don't forget the garlic! We like to do the same thing with asparagus, and when we are lazy we even use garlic powder!
One of my 12x12 ideas was from hearing a radio ad for a lawyer who only took serious cases! But all my ideas spring from such weird things!

    1. Love it! One of my nieces actually saw one of those ads on tv and got worried because it said "Call Now" and no one was in the room. So she grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down the number to give to my brother. So cute!

  4. I also feel intrigued to try roasted brussell sprouts now!

My books have been inspired by phases my children are going through (so real life events). headlines in newspapers, and family history.

    1. I love how I am not only providing a place for writers to chat, but I am also promoting veggies! Go try those roasted brussels sprouts right now, Ramona!

  5. My 11yo loves brussell sprouts pan fried with a good amount of garlic - yummy!

My latest story idea came when I discovered that the repetitive thumping noise I was hearing was my dog eating the house. Yes, she was actually eating the frame from around the front door.
