Wednesday Writers Weigh In: Its Almost Back to School Time!

Its almost back to school time!  Can you believe that we are already in the last few weeks of summer?  Its been a hot one for many of us around the globe.  I know that I am eagerly anticipating apple picking, pie baking, colored leaves and pumpkin lattes.

I am also excited about a new endeavor that I am developing this fall and looking to launch in early 2013.  That's right folks, I am going to start a business of creating educational curriculum and lesson plans for authors and teachers!  Its time I tapped back into my bachelor's degree in education, my masters degree in educational theater and my extensive resume of curriculum building.

Anyway, as I move forward with this project I could really use your help.

Authors, what do you look for in curriculum tie-ins and activities for classroom/library visits?  Also, what is usually your budget for such materials?

Thanks, writers!  I really appreciate your answers in advance!

Weigh In!

  1. I somehow did not know that you had an Ed Theater background, I think! Where did you study? I did the English Ed/Ed Theater MA at NYU. Your business sounds very cool. Good luck!

  3. OOh, way to go Marcie!!! I also enjoy creating curriculum aids and teacher study guides. I actually have had three published http://worddiaries.blogspot.com/p/published-works.html and a fourth was just sent to an author and I am awaiting her final revision request!

  5. What a great idea, Marcie! I am always trying to think up curriculum tie-ins for my books. Some are easier than others. So far I have made all my own materials except for the classroom guides for Can't Sleep Without Sheep and April Fool, Phyllis which I had done by Shannon Morgan who has a lot of expertise in curriculum. She helped me put together classroom guides connected to content standards - which i knew nothing about :)

    1. Content Standards are so important to teachers. Its how they can "prove" something is worthy of bringing to their classroom. Definitely want to include standards in my guides.

  6. Best of luck with this, Marcie! I think there is a real need because when I look for activities to go with reviews for Perfect Picture Book Friday, there are a lot of books with no resources. I am sure the authors just don't have the time to research and create.

    1. Good point, Penny. I also don't think all authors have the know-how. And it takes one thing off of the author's list of things to do. Which is also why I want to include an option for a school visit lesson plan. Some authors do not even have a clue what to do when they go into a classroom. This would give them a blueprint to assure a homerun when they visit.
